Hunger Relief

BI-LO Charities recognizes the need of those in our communities who do not have the ability to feed themselves or their families. Currently two major Hunger Relief scan programs take place annually; one in the summer and one during the holiday season. You can participate and keep your local food banks stocked with a $5 donation to purchase a box of Southern Home food.

Summer Hunger Relief will be in stores from July 14- August 24, 2010. Each BI-LO store near you has selected a food bank in their community.

History

Despite a struggling economy, the 2008 Holiday Hunger Relief program exceeded the 2007 numbers. In this economy, many families will continue to need assistance and summer is typically a time when food banks find themselves in need. BI-LO Charities and the Corporate Brands department are in the process of working on our 2nd annual Summer Hunger Relief Program.

The 2008 Summer Hunger Relief Program (formerly known as Bags Hunger and Holiday Hope) was an enormous success. These bags contained the essential groceries most often requested by food bank customers. BI-LO has sponsored a holiday food donation program for many years; however, this is the first one to take place during the summer months. Due to a tight economy, food banks are experiencing greater demand and fewer donations. The high cost of gas, utilities and other core expenses are impacting more people across our trade area. Food banks are feeling the pinch, too. A total of 38 food banks will be receiving the donations to distribute across our trade area.
