COLUMBIA, S.C. (October 23, 2009) – Friday, October 23, is BI-LO Day at the South Carolina State Fair. Fair-goers will have the chance to ride all the exciting rides for one low prices and eat fantastic food, but they will also be given the opportunity to provide much-needed support for Harvest Hope Food Bank and local families in need.
From 10 – 8 p.m., BI-LO Charities will have Hunger Relief Bags at the South Gate entrance to the State Fairgrounds that can be purchased for only $5. These Hunger Relief Bags are pre-packed with items that are most often requested by food banks, including macaroni & cheese, beans, soup, dry spaghetti and spaghetti sauce, and tuna.
Everyone who purchases a $5 Hunger Relief Bag to donate to Harvest Hope will be entered in a drawing to win four tickets to see the University of South Carolina take on conference rival Vanderbilt at Williams-Brice Stadium the following evening. The winner will be drawn at 8 p.m. on Friday and does not have to be present to win.
As people are entering or leaving the fair, they will be able to buy these Hunger Relief Bags and place them on a Harvest Hope Food Bank truck. It is the goal of BI-LO Charities’ to sell 4,000 Hunger Relief bags and fill up a truck with groceries for Harvest Hope, which will help the food bank provide twelve thousand meals for families in need in the 20 counties they serve across the Midlands. Harvest Hope’s mascot Cool Can Sam and BI-LO’s Walter’s Pals will also be at the south gate to entertain children as they enter and exit the fair.
“Harvest Hope Food Bank provides assistance for so many people in the community, and we are honored to team up with fair-goers and Harvest Hope to put food on the table of many hungry families. The State Fair is a great place to hold our Hunger Relief food drive because everyone comes to the fair, and, while we are enjoying everything the fair has to offer, we can also make a big difference for families in need,” said Carol Browning, Executive Director of
BI-LO Charities.
